Yamaha MT-09 upgrades
The MT-09 is the hooligan project bike. The early FZ-09 practically required aftermarket intervention — its fueling and suspension are the most fixed problems in modern naked-bike history — and the 889 generation is a favorite canvas because the triple takes to exhausts, gearing and ergonomic work so well.

Generation map
- FZ-092014–2016
847 cc CP3 launch generation: famously snatchy fueling and underdamped suspension — the reason the flash-and-suspension canon exists. Sold as FZ-09 in the US.
- 2017 update2017–2020
Still FZ-09 in 2017, MT-09 from 2018. Adds traction control, slipper clutch, upshift quickshifter, improved suspension and the LED face. Same 847 engine — most mechanical parts carry across 2014–20.
- 889 gen2021–2023
889 cc engine, new CF die-cast aluminum frame, R1-derived 6-axis IMU electronics, up/down quickshifter. Nothing meaningful crosses over from the 847 bikes.
- 2024 restyle2024+
New bodywork and lighting, 5-inch TFT, new switchgear; Y-AMT option from 2025. SP trim adds an Öhlins shock and upgraded front brake hardware. Same 889 platform underneath, but cosmetic and dash-adjacent parts split from 2021–23.
Street path & track path
Two ordered sequences for the same machine. The order is the advice: spend where the next problem is, not where the catalog is loudest.
Street path
Tail, levers, sliders
Fender eliminator, adjustable levers, frame sliders. Standard first weekend, and the MT-09's stock plate hanger deserves what's coming to it.
Fix the fueling
On 2014–16 bikes the flash is effectively mandatory — the snatchy throttle is maps, not cables, and the community verdict is 'if you're on the fence, just do it.' On 2021+ it's optional polish.
Exhaust
The Akrapovič low-mount full titanium is the signature MT-09 look and sound; SC-Project and Graves cover other tastes. The triple is one of the few engines where the sound alone justifies the spend.
Suspension both ends
Gen-one bikes need springs and a revalve (or cartridges and a shock) just to match the engine. 2021+ is better but still built to a price — set it up for your weight either way.
Calm the front, fix the seat
A steering damper (GPR or Öhlins) is community canon for the light, wheelie-happy front end, and the stock seat is a known complaint — both are quality-of-life money well spent.
Rubber
Sticky sport rubber suits how these bikes actually get ridden. The 847s especially ship on rubber far more polite than the engine.
Track path
Tires
Trackday DOT rubber first. The MT-09 makes a surprisingly capable track bike, and the contact patch is where that starts.
Brake consumables and feel
Track pads, braided lines, fresh fluid. The 847's axial master cylinder is the weak link — a radial master swap is the community-reported fix; 2021+ bikes came with one.
Suspension for pace
Cartridges and a quality shock sprung for your weight — on gen-one bikes this is not optional at track pace. The SP trim's Öhlins rear is a head start, not a finish line.
Damper and crash prep
Steering damper for hard drives out of corners, case covers and sliders for the inevitable. Rearsets add cornering clearance the street pegs give up early.
Flash, pipe, gearing
Full system and flash together, then gearing — the triple pulls hard enough that a tooth or two at the rear wakes up corner exits without hurting much else.
Shift assist
2014–16 bikes take a standalone quickshifter; 2017–20 have factory upshift that a flash can refine; 2021+ up/down works well out of the box.
Parts notes for the MT-09
What fits and what the community runs, category by category. Typical street prices sit at the other end of the links.
Exhaust
Akrapovič's low-mount full titanium is the classic; SC-Project for the Euro sound, Graves for US race pedigree. Decat work sets codes without a flash — budget them together.

Tune
The defining MT-09 mod. Vcyclenut and 2WDW are the community-quoted flash services — fixes the 847's throttle snatch, raises the fan threshold, removes restrictions and cleans up quickshifter behavior. On 2014–16 it's the first dollar you should spend.

Suspension
2014–16: underdamped both ends, springs and revalve minimum. 2017–20: improved but still soft. 2021+: decent base, SP adds Öhlins rear. K-Tech, Öhlins and Race Tech cover the upgrade paths; spring for your weight first.

Brakes
847 bikes: pads, braided lines and a radial master cylinder swap (community-reported) transform a mushy stock setup. 2021+ came with a radial master; consumables still help.

Rearsets
A top-three complaint on every generation. Aftermarket seats and foam rebuilds are a mature market for this bike — buy comfort, it changes how far you ride.

Tail Tidy & Billet
TST Industries and New Rage Cycles make the clean model-specific kits, with integrated tail lights that tidy the whole rear end.

Quickshifter
2014–16: none stock — Annitori and HealTech standalones fit. 2017–20: factory upshift only. 2021+: factory up/down. Flashes refine engagement on all factory-equipped years.

Drivetrain
A tooth or two at the rear sharpens an already eager engine; 520 conversions are common on track builds. Watch chain length when regearing — the stock length runs out fast.

Electronics
The steering damper is community canon for the platform's light front end — GPR and Öhlins are the two names. 2021+ bikes add the IMU suite; leave it on, it's good.

Gotchas & fitment traps
The year splits and part quirks that eat money on this platform.
Cross-model interchange
Community-reported. Paddock folk knowledge, not manufacturer fitment data. Verify part numbers for your exact year and market before spending.
- The CP3 family — XSR900, Tracer 9 (and 900), Niken — shares engines generation-for-generation: engine parts, covers and flash services cross within the 847 or 889 families (community-reported).
- FZ-09 and MT-09 are the same bike across the 2018 US rename — search both names for parts and used listings.
Yamaha MT-09 FAQ
Is the ECU flash worth it on the FZ-09/MT-09?
It's the single most agreed-on mod for the platform, especially 2014–16: it fixes the snatchy throttle, raises the fan threshold, removes restrictions and cleans up the quickshifter. The community's own words: if you're on the fence, just do it.
What year did the MT-09 get the 890 engine?
2021 — displacement went from 847 to 889 cc alongside a new frame and R1-derived IMU electronics. Treat 2014–20 and 2021+ as different bikes when shopping parts.
Does the MT-09 need a steering damper?
It's the community's most repeated MT-09 hardware advice after suspension. The front end goes light under hard drive; sort setup and tire condition first, then a GPR or Öhlins damper if you ride it the way the engine invites.
Are the FZ-09 and MT-09 the same bike?
Yes — the US used the FZ-09 name from 2014–2017, then adopted the global MT-09 name in 2018. Within the 847 era most parts interchange; the 2021 platform change is the real dividing line.
